Mean Machine Angel

I'm currently going through a bit of a 2000AD phase. I also need to fill a space on my wall above the TV so i thought I'd combine the two & make myself a mean machine head butting through the wall.

At the moment he's just at the clay sculpt phase but is ready to be moulded & cast. I've also done a quick colouring in job in photoshop over the sculpture.......just to see what it might look like really.

The embed option doesnt seem to be working so a link will have to suffice for now until i figure it out......not that anyone ever actually comes here! :)

Batman Live

Early on in 2011 i was part of the team that would help create the Batmobile for the new live arena show. The car itself was designed by Professor Gordon Murray & built by Asylum Models & Effects LTD. I was part of the mould shop team that moulded & cast the Batmobile. I later on landed a dream job of sculpting Batman & Robins suits. Which was nice.
First up is the Batmobile. Professor Murray's design was turned into a computer file & was used to "cut out" life size pieces of the car on a cnc machine. These pieces were then assembled, like a large model kit, & cleaned up & refined to a suitable finish.

Once completed the car body was disassembled into mouldable parts which consisted of the left & right front & rear wheel arch wings, nose cone, fuselage, rear spoiler & a back piece that doubled as a stylised Bat symbol. Fibreglass moulds were made of the pieces & wooden framework was added to the outside of the moulds to prevent warping. In the case of the fuselage a steel frame was added due to the size of the mould, some 16 feet long.

Once the moulds were done fibreglass casts were made of the body parts using fire retardant resin. Meanwhile the engineers were constructing a custom built framework that would go inside the car.

The car was attached together around the framework & assembled by the model makers & engineers. The model makers spent alot of time finishing the assembled pieces to a immaculate finish while the engineers & electricians worked on making the cockpit work as well as the traction system that allows the car to move. Specially sequenced lights were put into the wheels & the "afterburner" was rigged to glow & emit smoke creating the illusion of a flaming jet. In total two Batmobiles were created at Asylum by a team of some 15 or more people.

As the mould shops work was coming to an end on the Batmobile the boss came strolling over with a handful of images of the Batsuit as it appears in the game Arkham Asylum. Coincidentally at that time i was quite addicted to that game so instantly recognised the design. I somehow knew what he was going to say before he even uttered a word & am not ashamed to say that without thinking i blurted out the line "youve got to let me sculpt that batsuit man!".
As it turned out the executives in charge of the whole production were unhappy with the current Batsuit that had been created for the show by another company & had asked Asylum Models & Effects if they could help out. The main hurdle we faced was time. the show was premiering in roughly 3 weeks which meant that i would have no longer than 7 days to sculpt the suit!!
The suit was to be based on the Arkham Asylum suit & i was given a handful of reference images to get started. As soon as i got home that night i turned on the PS3 & opened up the Batman character trophy i had unlocked some time before & took lots of photos of my own, one of which is here.

The tricky thing with this, aside from the tight deadline, was they wanted me to try & match the proportions onto a real person. Obviously compromises had to be made but i tried my best to get the proportions as close to the game character as possible. There are 3 actors that play Batman so we were given a lifecast of the largest of these actors. The cast was divided into sections to aid with moulding later on: torso, arms & legs. It was made so that i could sculpt onto the whole body & then remove the parts when it came time to mould them. The torso sculpt was essentially a vest & the legs were like shorts while each arm went on seperately. The gauntlets were part of the arm sculpts. Shin pads were also sculpted.

Once the sculpt had been approved fibreglass moulds were made & cores taken from the moulds. The suit itself was cast in a flexible & durable foam. Spandex suits were attached to the cores & these cores were then put into the moulds & the foam was injected in. Once cured the moulds were opened & the foam casts were firmly fixed to the spandex undersuit which was taken off the core & given to the fabrication department who turned it into a wearable suit. This was then painted. I was quite vocal in my distaste of the colour scheme but at the end of the day its fot a live performance & actually works very well in context!

All in all i was fairly happy with how it turned out. Dont get me wrong theres plenty im not happy with & would love to change but for a 6 day sculpt its not half bad if i do say so myself! Besides i was about to get a chance to do another.
A few days after the official release of the new improved Batsuit the shows creators were now worried that it made their Robin suit look a bit naff. So i was asked to sculpt Robin too! The design was essentialy the same as Batman but with some subtle changes. I'd had time to mull over what i didnt like about the Batsuit & applied this to Robin & as a result i feel that Robin was the better of the 2 sculpts. A much tighter & confident sculpt helped by not having to try & give him impossible proportions! Again time was short so i had 6 days to get it sculpted. The process was exactly the same as the Batsuit but with little changes in places such as the elbows due to seeing what hadnt worked well with the Batsuit.

So there you have it. All in all a dream job for a geek such as myself! All that remains to be said is that all photos & videos appear courtesy of Asylum Models & Effects LTD. (even the ones that dont). And if youre into cool models & effects then check out their impressive website at:

Archives of Randomness

This section is dedicated to all the random things ive made over the years that have been hanging around in my computer doing nothing at all. Contained within this vault are sculptures, props, dodgy monsters, artwork & all manner of other things, some of which should probably stay unseen.....
The above fellow is Shorrok the Berserker. I sculpted him in a day & mould & cast him the next day, just in time for my friends Halloween party. The look was completed with some plastic skulls, swords, axes as well as a rented Planet of the Apes costume (gorilla warrior i believe) & a Dracula cape from Woolworths.

Staying with the dodgy monsters for a moment I present to you my first ever "professional" creature. The Cobald Necromancer as (un)seen in Dungoens & Dragons 2: Wrath of the Dragon God. At the time (2004) i thought it was brilliant. Now....well, i like the T-Shirt im wearing.

Ok. I feel i should show you something decent after those last pics. The chap below was created for my final year degree show back in 2002. I made a bedroom for him as well but the only photo that remains is the one i took of him in my old student bedroom.

Next up is something i did for a kids entertainer. He had a weird robot parrot thing that he wanted to be a baby dragon hatching out of an egg. So i took his parrot & sculpted this on top of it. I was looking forward to moulding it but the guy vanished off the face of the earth so it never came to pass.

Staying with the Dragon theme, heres another one i did to pass the time when i was learning how to work with Super Sculpey.

Im a bit of a Warhammer geek & i once sculpted a bust of a Lizardman Saurus Warrior. Its still at my mums house on a shelf in her garage. Its in pretty good shape so next time i visit i might bring it home so i can mould it.

Next up is a Batfink collectible i did for a company many years ago. I say company but it was in fact a guy in his conservatory. He asked me if i could sculpt the figure in 5 days. Thinking i'd be working in sculpey or plastiline i said "yeah no problem". Then he gave me a load of the hardest wax ive ever used. It was like rock. It took me 8 days to finish it!! I think i could have done it quicker if id chiseled it from marble. That was many moons ago & im now quicker with wax!

Next up is a trio of characters from the pages of 2000ad. Joe Pineapples - sharpshooter of the ABC Warriors, sculpted with super sculpey & added old bolts & cocktail sticks in the throat to look like robotic parts. Mean Machine Angel - psychotic head buttist from the wastes of the cursed earth, plastiline sculpt that i just painted straight onto with acrylic paints. And last of all Sharky - leader of the Ozzy Osbourne Bad Boys. Plastiline sculpt.

Heres something id forgotten all about. When i was making the BioHazard armour the students asked me if i could also make a mutant for them. I said it was unlikely as the armour was taking up all my time but i did a small maquette anyway. The idea was that it was going to be a pullover rubber mask that would only be glimpsed quickly. I was inspired by The Thing & Wicked City. Time & money restraints meant that it necer happened.

I did this mourning angel figure after id made some of the crappest shit of my life. A company that will remain unnamed asked me to sculpt about 5 differnt angel figures on tombs in about a week. Needless to say they didnt come out too well, though the guy i was doing them for thought they were amazing.....but he's the kind of guy that thinks anything is amazing as long as it will make him rich. Anyway, embarrassed to be associated with his tat i made a decent version of my favourite angel at home for my own satisfaction. I dont think the entrepreneur ever got rich.

I did this little fella as a present for my cousin. Super Sculpey baked & painted.

Gorilla

This was done very quickly, a couple of days i think. My mum called me about 3 days before her birthday & asked if i would sculpt her a gorilla so i said yes! Again this is Super Sculpey which i then baked & painted entirely black as she requested.......

Orc

Here's a guy i created as a personal project. I pretty much made him up as i went along really. I spent about 3 days on the clay sculpt & used marbles for the eyes. The teeth were made from sculpey which i removed from the finished sculpt & baked hard.

I messed around with various designs & colour schemes in photoshop until i had something i was happy with.

A plaster mould was made & latex was poured inside & dried until thick enough. The resulting cast was tidied up & painted with a 50/50 mix of acrylic paint & pros-aide. Seeing as though i was making it up as i went i decided to go for a different paint job than the photoshop version though the hair remained the same.

Glass eyes from a taxidermy supplier were inserted in place of the marbles & the sculpey teeth were glued back in. I cut up an old wig & attached the hair which was then cut to match the photoshop image. I applied gloss varnish to the mouth & nostrils & manked up his hair with styling wax to make it look greasy.

He sits atop my speaker next to my desk!
